Brene Brown: "Listening to Shame" Shame is an unspoken epidemic, the secret behind many forms of broken behavior. Brené Brown, whose earlier talk on vulnerability became a viral hit, explores what can happen when people confront their shame head-on. Her own humor, humanity and vulnerability shine through every word. 20m 38s [Post on the Catholica Forum that first drew attention to this talk. 22Sep2011] | [Post on the Catholica Forum drawing attention to the Houston TED Talk she mentions. 22Sep2011]

Brene Brown: "The power of vulnerability" Brene Brown studies human connection — our ability to empathize, belong, love. In a poignant, funny talk at TEDxHouston, she shares a deep insight from her research, one that sent her on a personal quest to know herself as well as to understand humanity. A talk to share. 35m 55s [Post on the Catholica Forum drawing attention to this video 22Sep2011]

Sr Joan Chittister: "The Spirituality of Struggle" Sister Joan Chittister explores the landscape of suffering and hope in this moving video recorded in 2005. The theme of the talk is taken from her book published around that time, "Scarred by Struggle, Transformed by Hope". We struggle, she says, against change, isolation, darkness, fear, powerlessness, vulnerability, exhaustion, and scarring; and while these struggles sometimes seem insurmountable, we can emerge from them with the gifts of conversion, detachment, faith, courage, surrender, limitations, endurance, transformation, and (perhaps most important) hope. This is an uplifting video for everyone but more especially for anyone facing some struggle in life. 35m 55s [Uploaded to Catholica Video Channel on 27Aug2011]

A conversation with Dr Jane Anderson... Brian Coyne and Amanda McKenna in conversation with Dr Jane Anderson about her life and her postdoctoral research program into progressive Catholicism. 55m 52s [Catholica commentary where we first published this on 21st July 2011]

What's your view of God today? Dr Jane Anderson interviews Amanda (Milly) McKenna as part of a postdoctoral research fellowship seeking to discern the views of Catholics who have become disenchanted with the institutional agenda but still very much consider themselves "Catholic". Further information about the interview, and the research project, can be found HERE. 43m 08s [Catholica commentary where we first published this on 19th July 2011]

Why am I a Catholic? This is part of the address Boston Globe columnist and academic James Carroll delivered at the American Catholic Council in Detroit on Saturday, 11th June 2011. 13m 26s [Catholica commentary where we first published this on 2nd July 2011]

Trends and contradictions in religious belief in Australia Social researcher, Hugh Mackay, talks about trends and contradictions in belief in Australia, the value of progressive thinking in religious institutions, and how both atheism and fundamentalism challenge contemporary religion. The interview with Eureka Street TV was conducted after he spoke at the Common Dreams conference for religious progressives in Melbourne in April 2010. 6m 49s [Catholica Forum entry where we first drew attention to this lecture] | [Original Commentary on Eureka Street]

Jesus the Jew - but what sort of Jew? John P. Meier, a Catholic priest, is professor of New Testament at the University of Notre Dame. He is perhaps the foremost biblical scholar of his generation. Meier's work represents the first time an American Catholic biblical scholar has attempted a full-scale, rigorously scientific treatment of the "historical Jesus". By the "historical Jesus", Meier means the Jesus whom we can recover or reconstruct by using the tools of modern historical research. Series: "Burke Lectureship on Religion & Society". This video was originally recorded on 25 October 2001, uploaded to the UCTelevision Channel on YouTube on 8th January 2008 and to the Catholica Channel on YouTube on 31st May 2010. 1h 21m 50s [Catholica Editorial where we first drew attention to this lecture]

The Mission of Christ, the Mission of the Church, the Mission of a Diocese Dominican bishop, Anthony Fisher, was installed as the Third Bishop of the Western diocese of urban Sydney, the Parramatta Diocese, on 4 March 2010. His homily delivered at the Installation Mass outlined his broad sweep of the Mission of Jesus Christ, the Mission of the Church, and what he sees as his personal Mission which he was seeking to invite the people of the Western suburbs of Sydney to embrace. Here at Catholica we think the homily offers rich food for reflection and discussion at a number of levels: firstly the evident thought put into the address, secondly in that the Western suburbs of Sydney in many respects are typical of the social challenges encountered in almost any major city of the Western world, and also because of questions that intersect with many of the discussions the community at Catholica engages in of the problems facing the Church today. Because of YouTube limitations the video is in three parts of 9m 54s, 5m 59s, 6m 12s (22m 5s total), [Catholica Editorial where we first drew attention to this homily]
