The question of what we believe: creeds? A seemingly ever bubbling topic of discussion on Catholica, and previous discussions boards such as the old CathNews discussion board, has been the question of creeds. Today Dr Gabe Lomas, in response to the more recent conversations on Catholica, offers a more critical examination of the subject. Dr Lomas asks: "Has the time come for the leadership of the body of Christ, in which we all share, to be better spread through the church, particularly as regards what we do and don't believe, and what we can and can't say 'credo' to?" What do we really mean by the word "Church"? Dr Gabe Lomas knows a thing or two about liguistics — he's spent a lifetime immersed in the subject. As a priest he's also spent a bit of time immersed in theology. In today's commentary he proposes that we need a discussion around what we mean by the word "Church". It is a confusing word that can mean different things to different people, and even different things to the same people in different contexts. How do we sort out the confusion of what we mean?
