BRISBANE EVENT AT ACU: Christian Gay Rights (Main Forum)
In every Christian group in the world today, a deep, emotional debate about homosexuality threatens to tear faith communities apart. The questions are provocative: Can openly gay men and lesbians be ordained? Can church leaders give official blessings to long-term homosexual relationships? Religious people usually like to find common ground. But on this issue there can be no compromise: Those who believe homosexuality is sinful think they must battle what God abhors. Those who see an emerging definition of homosexuality as a normal, though minority, part of humanity believe they are fighting ignorance.
The ACU Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) was formed in 2006 to offer support to members of the ACU community, both staff and students, in offering a safe environment where people can discuss relevant topics and issues that affect their everyday life. Some of these issues range from the secular to the religious and other factors in being, dealing with, understanding, and working with LGBT people. This group is open to and welcomes all people from all walks of life and is an alliance based on being open and honest.
Speaker Daniel Gullotta is a Theological Student at ACU, a youth worker, writer for Catholica, and member of the Anglican Church of Australia. As a heterosexual who is a budding theologian, church member, and a Christian, Daniel believes that Christianity's integrity rides on how religious people deal with gay rights. In dealing with homophobia and hetrosexism, Daniel believes that no compromise is possible and that while embracing change is a present cross to bear, change will happen with or without the Church - Daniel believes that gay people must claim the cross of change and Christianity with them create the change. The question being asked is, "What does religion have to do with gay rights?"
Daniel believes alot and argues.

Yes, Peter, I am with you, hope Daniel encourages people of good will to be charitable.
God loves homosexual people as He loves the rest of us and, further, I go so far as to write, heretically, that He loves how they express their love and weeps for the wicked cruelties so many of us visit upon them.

I wish you well and I agree with the other writers in this thread...and quite obviously with you when you state that religion should have a lot to do with gay rights.
I am frequently ashamed as a Catholic and Christian when I see so much hatred and hurtful homophobic behaviour in our country and elsewhere in our world... and I really believe that our Christian religion has done much harm in advancing such attitudes and very little to advance the liberating and freeing and compassionate teachings of Jesus and his totally inclusive and unconditional love for all men and women.
It is high time that all Christians reclaim the Gospel Jesus, the man from Nazareth, and to reflect more on his teachings and so give special emphasis to them in our contemporary world. And in any case, any new Christian understanding of our contemporary world and social mores will only come about, I believe, through a better understanding of the Scriptures and newer and continuing revelation, remembering that revelation must not be restricted to the Bible. God's revealing Word expresses itself in the world around us and in the people that we love and who love us. It makes itself known through the signs of the times, through a better understanding of social evolution and so on. We should be continually open to God's Spirit, a Spirit that frees, accepts and enhances.
I pray that the Brisbane Event will be a great success.
Peter

Dear Daniel,
As a Gay Man who lives proudly in the Catholic Community albiet as a "Holy Irritant" I wish you well in this program of reform and solidarity. Would love to join you, however I have work commitments at that time.
I am disturbed to note that the ACU Gay Straight Alliance does not appear anywehere on the ACU web. There are other good models of such groups such as that at Duquesne University and the groups on various Jesuit Colleges in the USA. Members of the GSA also publish information such as that from Seattle University.
As a former staff member of ACU McAuley I am plesaed to hear of the Gay-Straight Alliance and hope I can contribute to its life and mission.
Tony

Daniel,
My best wishes as well for success in your endeavours. It is time gay people are treated with more respect and dignity, and listened to! - not just a few words in the Catechism "respect compassion and sensitivity". Just words.

Dear Daniel and those responding, i write that until humanity especially religion can accept everyone and everything with an unqualified love which includes no judgment of another's status before God, we are very sick indeed. When will the message of Jesus be heard?

BRISBANE EVENT AT ACU: Christian Gay Rights
As one who spent nine long years within the physical [and mental] confines of the seminary that is now ACU I can only rejoice that ,ironically , the Gay Rights event is taking place there. It should lay many of the ghosts who roam those rooms.. I wish it every success and bless all who participate in the search for truth and justice and love in the name of Jesus.
