Is 'Marvellous Melbourne' on the way back? (Main Forum)

by AnnieJ @, Monday, June 25, 2012, 10:43 (359 days ago)

Information from the 2001 Australian Census seem to show that Melbourne is rather different from its great rival Sydney, the 'Emerald City'. (Are you out out there, Bill?)

The census results show that more than just the ethnic make-up has changed. Migration has reinforced the city's traditional values, because the newcomers tend to be socially more conservative than those born here.

... despite what many would expect, Melbourne now leans to traditional family values. More residents over 25 are married here than in the rest of Australia. Fewer Melbourne people live in de facto relationships than elsewhere - especially among under 25s.

That reflects the impact of the 433,628 immigrants who have settled in Melbourne in the past decade or so. One in four migrants makes Melbourne their home and they bring with them their homeland's values.

In the boom of the late 19th C, Victoria's capital was known as 'Marvellous Melbourne', and was strongly non-Conformist in religion, and wealthier than its rival. Are these days returning in the 21stC?

Is 'Marvellous Melbourne' on the way back?

Yes, beautiful Annie, I am here.

Melbourne is a decent-enough! city with great streets, parks and delicious food ih suburban restaurants, good people, but there is only one Emerald City, the City of the Harbour, Sin City at times, with beauty which lifts the heart.

I know you will agree!

I have to admit, Bill, that Sydney has first place in my heart, much as I like Melbourne. :-) :-)

Haven't any of you good folks crossed the Tweed? There is life north of there, but it is different, as we have been told for ages. Queensland is different, and not only on State of Origin nights.

Judith, I've visited Brisbane and other QLD spots several times, and loved it. But couldn't live there because of the humidity - it knocks me for six. :waving: :waving:

Is 'Marvellous Melbourne' on the way back?

When ever I visit Perth I find that it is always too hot, so Queensland is not a state I would choose to visit.

But there are some lovely people living there!

Not too sure about the folk who live in Sydney but it always was a dodgy place:lol2:

Let us light a candle and say to the dark, we beg to differ

I have been awaiting our alien's contribution to the conversation and this hits the spot!.......from the outpost settlement of WA, the home of Laurie Connell, Bond!! and his ripping-off of young couples with homes on the sandhills and, now, the Billionaire Mother To Be Feared!!

The Emerald City, once a convict camp, embued, embues, an whole nation with its beauty.

Helen, dear friend, you live in a beautiful spot, too. Thank you for bringing many smiles to my day.
I had a particularly bad turn this morning, was really crook, holding Bett's hand, but knew that, if I came through, a visit to this beautiful and inspirational and supportive community would help fix me......and it has.

Once again, thank you all.
