"It won't happen in my lifetime" (Main Forum)
"It won't happen in my lifetime" is something I've heard often repeated throughout my life. As a child I innocently asked 'why not?' and was given the same reply people around the globe have been given since time immemorial; the Church thinks in centuries.
Well, among developments over the past 10 years, the latest movements of the Vatican on their internal leaks has put paid to that notion in my mind once and for all. It seems the Vatican can move at almost lightening speed - when they want to. And isn't it interesting what they choose to act upon quickly - shows where their priorities really lie.
I've come to the conclusion that to say "it won't happen in my lifetime" is actually a cop-out. It neatly divests us of any need to take action, knowing that what we do or say won't have much (if any) impact on the course of events. It is a lazy attitude that allows injustice to continue and people to suffer, and is an attitude at odds with what Jesus taught. We can comfort ourselves with the knowledge that we're following the rules while the modern-day Samaritan lies bleeding in the gutter.
Where am I going with this? I don't rightly know. But I do know that SOMETHING has to happen - and in my lifetime.

Exactly what I was thinking earlier!
Interesting also are the reasons being given for the leaks and the various types of documents coming to light, although the Vatican admits that they have handled over 4000 saes of CSA not one single document has come to light!
(Will that happen in anyone's lifetime?).
It is happening.
Milly and Brian, it is happening in our lifetime, and a small part of 'it' is happening right here. Look in the mirror you two. it's called Catholica.
If the hierarchical Church is disintegrating, that is a sure sign that the Spirit has abandoned it. It's structure and rule are no longer appropriate for educated democratic societies. New forms are arising from the ashes, small communities as mentioned by Joe, Francis, Helen and others, and the Catholica community that provides a meeting place for all, an ear to the ground on wider happenings, and thoughtful reflection on the teachings of Jesus.

Amen to this Sue. We as members of Catholica share in the change that is taking place. If it were not for places like Catholica we wouldn't know where to start. But because we can discuss our thoughts and ideas and yes, our criticism of the Church in a safe place, we can develop our own 'peasant theology' (said with tongue in cheek) without the help of bishops or others more interested in dogma and doctrine.
It is happening in our life time - and thank God for that!

Let us light a candle and say to the dark, we beg to differ
It is happening.
And when we speak of the Church remember that we are the Church! Maybe it is that the People of God change before any change can happen at the big end of town. But then of course, the boys in red actually don't listen to us 'little people'.
And yes, Catholica is a blessing as we gather each day to help each other come to terms with what is happening to the institution that meant so much to us in our earlier lives and that has now imploded on itself (like a black hole). But the Spirit that blows throughout the universe is quite capable of bringing new life to even the driest bones! Think of the new life sprouting within each of us that is waiting to come to fruition.

"It won't happen in my lifetime"
I am eagerly awaiting the next Act of the Vatigate play/drama/comedy/tragedy unfolding before us. As you say, the Vatican can move swiftly when it listens to the Temple Police, but with glacial speed when commonsense is involved. May we both live to see the changes we know are coming and do what we can to speed them along.
Brian, I am still wrestling with what, for me, is dogma, what is doctrine and what is dog's breakfast in the Church.

Judith...you mean there is a difference....?

Sue, that is the problem. I can't see any real difference

Dogma and dog's breakfasts...
Judith, in the string presently at the top of the board I've just posted a comment trying to tease out one small aspect of this. In my comment there in response to James I argue, as one example, that while I might be sceptical about some "Catholic" stuff that I might trash into the realms of superstition there is a case to be made that the whole religious notion of a "Spirit" that drives human behaviour is not such a stupid idea after all. I effectively ask: can we believe in a "Spirit" without having to get caught up in all the superstitious mumbo-jumbo? That is an example to me where there are some "fundamentals" in the Catholic insight that are worth discussing albeit that a lot of the time it can quickly get sidetracked into all sort of wacky side tracks, dead ends and plain superstition.

Did the Holy Spirit speak on Pentecost Sunday?
That's the day this current, ongoing version of Roman corruption hit the headlines, isn't it?
Psalm 126:5: "Those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy."
Sowing for fifty years! - fifty means a Holy Year, doesn't it? Let's hope and pray for Life in the Church, the Life of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.

Thanks, Peter. Psalm 126:5: "Those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy."
I gather your and my tears, and those of the thousands/millions of disappointed and crying faithful, to form a tsunami that will baptise and cause metanoia in the ones despoiling the Church with their stuck-in-the-mud attitudes and carry those with hope in the joys of Vatican II to its highest peaks.

My purpose is to remember the love that created me in God one with my brothers and sisters and with all life. My function is to extend that love and unity each moment to all.
