John McCarthy QC, close friend of the NSW Labor Party and Foreign Minister Bob Carr, and member of Cardinal George Pell's "inner circle" of lay advisers, will be Australian Ambassador to the Holy See. We rumoured this on Catholica some weeks ago when the story first broke (and then was later denied officially). (It seems the problem is that they were waiting on the official response from the Vatican that he would be acceptable from their end.)

I nominate Bob Brown for the next ambassador to the Vatican. He is honest, clear, knowledgeable and frank.And he would not be overawed by them.

LOL. Enda, I think you're right. He might be the one to help clean the whole show up simply through a bit of honesty.
