Inquisition unleashed to weed out Vatican leakers
Tom Kington, Rome
April 28, 2012
from The Guardian

VATICAN employees who have been leaking embarrassing letters about corruption and nepotism in the tiny city state are to be hunted down by a crack squad of cardinals led by a senior member of the religious group Opus Dei.

Irritated by the anonymous release of documents to the press this year, Pope Benedict has named Cardinal Julian Herranz, 82, to lead a three-man team which will haul in members of staff for questioning and rifle through files until they catch the perpetrators of what has been dubbed ''Vatileaks''.

A statement on the front page of the Vatican's daily newspaper warned the team had a full ''pontifical mandate'' to ''shed complete light'' on whistleblowers, who have lifted the lid on alleged theft and false accounting.

You are naughty, Desi. :lol2: :lol2:

Given their ages - all in the 80s - I'm wondering if they'll live to see the end of the enquiry. :lol3: :lol3:

Inquisition unleashed to weed out Vatican leakers

Wonder if there are going to bring out the trusty torture racks from the days of the Inquisition stored in the Vatican Museum? Ratzinger probably kept them well oiled and in top working order.

Visualize the aged cardinals, with drool running out of sides of their mouths, salivating to turn the screws on the unsuspecting.

"Igor, take it up another notch or two. We'll break this heathen yet!"

As someone recently threatened with a blowtorch to correct my heretical stance, I can't even raise a wry smile at this, Journeyman.

What the hell is wrong with these people, and how do we point out to them that they are about as far from God as it is possible to get?

Don't laugh, torture is not out of the question. The edicts that allowed it during the Inquisition have never been repealed. We might be about to live in interesting times indeed!

I have long believed that if the death penalty were ever re-introduced into Australian society the government would have no difficulties finding people to play the role of the executioners, or the judges who order the executions. I have no doubt whatsoever that the same applies in the Church. If the Spanish Inquisition did ever return the institution would find no difficulties in finding people, even in very senior positions "to turn the screws".

It was reported that long ago . . .

by Alan @, 'Between Joy and Paradise, Texas', Sunday, April 29, 2012, 05:16 (416 days ago) @ Oh Yet We Trust

. . . Jesus said something like, "You will know the truth and the truth will set you free."

A free person is not likely to genuflect when so ordered, or to enthusiastically kiss the bishop's backside.

It is in the Curia's best interest to keep anyone from telling the truth about their curious ways.

What will the Inquisition do if they find out that the leakers were telling the truth, and it become too big for them to cover up? Will they hang the leakers in St Peter's Square, or simply let them have convenient illnessese and have to go into seclusion to convalesce (for the rest of their natural lives)?

Inquisition unleashed to weed out Vatican leakers

by AnnieJ @, Saturday, April 28, 2012, 12:02 (417 days ago) @ georgeh

The Vatican could certaily learn from the Leveson enquiry - about openness and accountability.

The Vatican processes will be secret, the accused will never see the evidence, or be allowed to reply to it, the report will never be released to the public, but only to those at the top of the Vatican tree, the penalties will be imposed with no right of appeal, and those convicted will probably have to keep their conviction secret.

This is what has happened to the Irish priests and others. There's no reason to suppose that it will be different in this case.

And these are the methods used by those who proclaim truth and justice. :surprised: :surprised:

Assuming the the aged trio of Cardinals already named to head the inquiry are mainly for the PR photos, who will be the #2 & #3 level clerics actually drafting the proposed avenues of investigations & shaping the summaries of findings??
Those who do the bulk of the work will shape the facts in secret to bolster their biases.
The real language of the Curial Church isn't Latin, but Orwellian doublespeak!!:-D

Kay,

You have put your finger where the leak is springing from. It's the lower level clerics who are the most efficient in doing the dirty work. They are the ones who are on the track to rise up and get the finer garments and pointed hats as they do their damaging work.

In yesterday The Drum (ABC) John Pilger wrote about the spread of global authoritarianism, so that citizenship has been effectively abolished. Hard-hitting article. "What are you going to do about it?" asks Pilger.

Inquisitions - can we learn from history?

by Sue, Sydney, Sunday, April 29, 2012, 11:00 (416 days ago) @ Ynot

The 'I' word might have been mentioned only half seriously, but perhaps we should be looking more closely at what is happening in the Church and comparing it with previous Church Inquisitions (a quick Google tells me there was more than one). What goes around comes around again.

Can the historians among us tell us if the present goings-on from Rome bear similarity to any of the previous inquisitions. If so, what can we learn about how to counter these moves ( a Christian Spring, mediated by the Internet???) or whether to just let it run it's course.

It may end up destroying the Church, though that has not happened in the past. At least it cannot destroy the teaching of Jesus.

The question remains however: what lessons can we learn from previous inquisitions to handle the present one?
