A few years ago, the Police Force was looking to have ALL clerical work, at that time done by police officers, to be done by employed civilians, thus freeing up the police to do that for which they are trained.
Surely, there must be quite a number of ordained men carrying out office work that could be just as ably done by properly trained lay staff. This could be the case from the top ranks in Rome to most dioceses in the world.
It is becoming obvious that a very large number of lay people are more educated than a lot of the current priests and bishops, so they would be able to understand and handle anything in such positions (but then again, would they want to?).
All the pomp and circumstances could be handed over to catering and wedding firms who manage to do wonderful and frou-frou things just as well as anyone in a cassock.
