Today's commentary: the cultural crisis in Catholicism (Main Forum)

As explained down the board [LINK] for some reason I stuffed up today and started preparing a video commentary in response to the discussion on moral contractions in Church teaching that has been drawing a bit of interest in this string further down the forum. I should have been putting the energy into preparing Ian Elmer's commentary for today but for some reason got the days mixed up in my mind. (I'll run Ian's commentary tomorrow.)

This is the introduction to today's videoblog commentary which I've published on YouTube:

The Catholic Church is facing a massive crisis in participation — people have given up participating in the sacraments and listening to what the bishops and the institution has to say. This commentary is about this crisis and addresses what the author says is a deep cultural crisis in the institution that lies at the heart of society's disillusion with the Church.
