Pope Benedict simply refuses to see that the church has a system problem. It was brought about in 1123 at the Lateran Council based on an ancient notion of ritual impurity.
And we see how thwarted eros quickly switched to thanatos (death) in the 350 year Inquisition.
The "resident pathogen" , to put it in safety terms, is the requirement for priestly celibacy, unless you are eastern rite in communion with Rome (but not in western eastern rite communions, unless you married before coming west as a priest), or ex Anglican.
It doesn't take another study as some church spokesman proposed this morning, involving a comparison of priestly incidence of abuse with that of youth workers, teachers and eg. Orthodox married priests.
The answer is plain.
