This program called for the acceptance of contraception and abortion as necessary for women’s liberation. Other programs supported the acceptance of homosexuality.

Well, I know Barry from old and he was always very pastoral on cases like this - but it looks a bit harsh when read in a brief interview.

However, I have mentioned before, when Humane Vitae came out in 1968 - I was attending a farewell do for one of the Cath Ed leaders and the TV was on as well waiting for the news. I remember one of the priests (and I won't name which one) saying 'I wish the Pope had kept his mouth shut about contraception'. Now this is a long time ago I agree, but why would that stick in my mind if it was not said?

But as we know in order to keep your job you have to toe the party line - especially easy when it is not you who have to bear the responsibility of childbirth!
