. Sunday Readings Corpus Christi Yr B (Y-not question the Sunday Readings)
There are many texts in our New Testament scriptures which indicate that the first followers of Jesus were convinced that he was still with them after his death, always and everywhere.
A favourite way of reminding themselves of the living presence of the transformed Jesus was to recall the emphasis he placed on eating and drinking as a sign of his presence.
By faith, and gradually by experience, we can become aware of his presence. But some kind of conscious faith-acknowledgement is required from us to enter into the mystery of the presence of Jesus. He is ready to be in communion with us so that we can be in communion with him, in his death/resurrection process.
At some level this can happen whenever we eat or drink, whatever we eat or drink.
Over the centuries this basic meal ritual has become elaborate, complex, controlled and remote from everyday experience. But Jesus is an everyday person in his readiness to be with anyone who is open to his transforming presence. Listen, I [Jesus] am standing at the door knocking; if you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to you and eat with you and you with me. Revelation 3:20
