Question without notice (Main Forum)

by Helen @, The other side of Australia, Wednesday, May 23, 2012, 16:23 (364 days ago) @ Brian Coyne

My question is - the Church is still with us, why is this so? Is it really because the Church is divinely ruled? Even though the Popes have been collective bastards, the Church somehow lurches from one century to the an other more or less intact.

Now, of course this could be simply because up until the 20th century, the majority of 'simple people' were not educated enough to be able to argue back and so they stuck to the Church because at least it kept the community together, gave the people identity and before universal medical care, offered hope to those who were in need of care.

But now, with universal education and governments taking on the social welfare role that once the Church took on, people don't 'need' the Church in that way any more and that is why there more action taken to walk away from the dictatorship of the hierachy.

Will the Church survive in its present form now? Though it has in the past - we are not threatened any more with hell and damnation.

Helen
