I remember a psychologist telling us at a seminar in prison that power was usually the root of adults molesting children. We were discussing why some men rape and then kill children, and he said that the first impulse was power - they were stronger than their victim - then sex, for gratification. Sadly, often the child was badly physically damaged and the attacker then panicked and killed the child in an attempt to hide the evidence. Not usually successful.
