I was in Europe this time last year and saw copies of Mein Kampf in bookshops, usually secondhand shops, in German and in English. They usually had the lurid red and black Nazi colours on the cover. I forget who said it, probably Clive James, but whoever it is says that when Germans who were adults in the 1930s said after, "But we didn't know" they have no excuse. It was all written there in all its horror and insanity and evil and they should have known. Of course you cannot read everything but there were 8 million copies printed in a population of what? Fifty million? He meant it and he meant to do it and he did. I do not know what affect printing it again will have. Not much I imagine - anyone who wants it now can get it easily. And this time they'll have to pay. Of course as it's out of copyright it won't cost much on IPad.
But there is a lesson there - that if politicians say things we have both the right and the duty to take them seriously. "He doesn't really mean it" is no excuse when you find out he bloodywell did.
