Thank God for the Religious Women who embraced Vatican II!
Dear Friends,
A big "Hear! Hear!" to Fr Dan Donovan for today's commentary. There seems an enormous sense of betrayal amongst many older Catholics today who experienced that beautiful vibrancy and excitement that characterised the Catholic Church during and immediately after the Second Vatican Council. It was of course slowly snuffed out by the sinister men who liked to parade around in cassocks who thought the Church would lose its moral authority if we embraced the radical ideas the majority of the world's bishops came up with at the Council. Should we be talking about 'leaven' or 'bad apples'? They certainly caused the institution to lose its moral authority in spectacular style.
Fr Dan Donovan's commentary today is in praise of religious women — and particularly in light of the attack the religious women of the United States are presently being subjected to by this Catholic mafia who want to put religious women back into cloisters and uncomfortable bad habits. I have argued often that here in Australia we owe a huge debt to religious women. I believe they played an enormous part in shaping the tolerance of this nation through the part they played in lifting Catholics into the societal mainstream. When Vatican II came it was the religious women who, perhaps more than other sectors in the Church, embraced the spirit of the Council and helped enthuse the rest of us. Enough from me. Check out what Dan Donovan has to say, I'm not half as provocative as he is.
