Supporting the Charter for Compassion...
Dear Friends,
As I suggest in the introduction to today's commentary there seems to be much spiritual energy in the world at the moment — both positive and negative. I don't think I've known a time in my life where there has been more discussion about morality, ethics, spirituality and religion than the present. Sadly a lot of this discussion these days happens externally to the mainstream churches who seem to becoming increasingly marginalised in the contributions to the discussions going on in society. The Australian Bishops are meeting in Sydney next week and I wonder if the increasing marginalisation of the Church will be a topic for discussion — or will their energies be focused on "tip-toeing around Big George" and discussing the new translations in the liturgy and the other initiatives that are seemingly focused on pacifying the insecure sectors of their flocks? Let us pray for all those bishops who are genuinely endeavouring to represent the vast majority in their flocks and not just the bleating minorities.
Today's commentary from Andrew McAlister draws our attention to two of those "big canvas" initiatives happening in the world at the moment which seem to be arising because of the neglect of those who lead the mainstream religious institutions. The World Parliament of Religions convenes in Melbourne in early December and the Charter for Compassion has been officially launched in recent days.
