Heaven: is it something to come or something now?

Dear Friends,

Commentary Headline

Today's commentary by Ian Elmer provided an "ah-ha moment" for me. For ages I've not really been convinced by some of the arguments Ian has presented when our conversations have moved to discussion of heaven, salvation, the afterlife and those sort of topics. I suppose I've taken a far more conservative or traditionalist line to what Ian has seemed to be presenting. Today's commentary, for some reason, finally opened up for me a better insight into where Ian is coming from in his reasoning. Do you believe in heaven? Or, the kingdom? Where do you situate it — in time, or in place? That's essentially the subject matter Ian is exploring today by looking at a particular "puzzling passage" in Luke. The commentary provides a wonderful "full stop" or conclusion to the exploration of Luke we've been engaged in for the past six weeks or so in the lead-up to the e-Conference on St Luke.

And on a housekeeping note: Milly and I are off to North Stradebroke Island tomorrow afternoon until Monday for a wedding. Sorry we're not going to be in a position to be visiting anyone else in Brisbane. We've had a number of invitations as a result of which we plan to make a special trip up there — probably in early December. Milly's going to be fully occupied most of the weekend and I'm simply exhausted after about six week's non-stop 14-18 hour days so I've got the latest Dan Brown thriller packed and I intend to just veg out. I'll publish the next instalment of Kaiser's novel tomorrow before we leave and then there will be a break until we resume our normal commentary schedule again on Tuesday.
