Searching for the spiritual language that better responds to the needs of the majority...

Dear Friends,

Commentary Headline

I'm publishing early today as we're off to the airport again this morning to deliver our guest from Mississippi back to her aeroplane for the long flight home again. Today's lead commentary comes from our most recent previous house guest from the United States, Tom McMahon. He mentions Karen Armstrong towards the end of today's commentary and foreshadows he'll be exploring more of her thoughts next week in his commentary. I'm becoming a huge fan of Karen Armstrong. A few days ago Amanda handed me her autobiography "The Spiral Staircase" saying "you'll identify with much of her journey. I wasn't able to put this book down until I had finished it." When the women of this house went out yesterday to explore the sights at Katoomba I picked up the book and before I knew it I had consumed the first hundred pages. I am not at all surprised at the success Karen Armstrong is enjoying as a writer on spiritual and religious themes. She somehow responds to the hunger that many are experiencing today for spiritual answers that the institutional church is no longer capable of responding to. Tom McMahon is another of those brave enough to call a spade a friggin' shovel as we continue this search for a language of spirituality, and forms of ministry and priesthood, that respond better to the real spiritual needs of the majority of the people who have now absented themselves from the pews.
