What sort of priests do we need in the future?

Dear Friends,

As we pause today to remember the 911 anniversary it is perhaps worth recalling that at the heart of the reason for this attack were religious motives and perceptions. How is human civilisation going to overcome this tendency in sections of our populations who want to go around killing and excommunicating others to prosecute their views of what God wants?

Commentary Headline

Tom McMahon's commentary today isn't addressing any 911 questions but continues his exploration of the psychology of priesthood down through the ages. The thrust of his investigation fits well with our broad objective here at Catholica of seeking to find the new understandings of our religious beliefs and theologies that synthesise more comfortably with the new knowledge that is being infused into Creation that was simply not available to our forebears. As a society we do need to recognise the skills and charisms of those with especial spiritual insight and giftedness. What characteristics do we look for in those who lead us in the great spiritual quest of life?
