The Battle for God...

Dear Friends,

Commentary Headline

I'm increasingly coming to the view that perhaps the greatest threat to human civilisation is not climate change or some form of economic catastrophe but fundamentalism in all its forms. Today's commentary takes the form of a review I've written of Karen Armstrong's book The Battle for God. The woman is not only a great writer in terms of her style what I love about her is that she's a "big picture" person. In a complex landscape of ideas, politics, power plays and ideas she cuts to the quick of the stuff that is really important and which is driving the whole complex. The book is not new. It was originally published in 2000 and the edition I read was published in 2004 but the ideas she is exploring — the rise of Fundamentalism in Judaism, Christianity and Islam continues to be very relevant today given the continuing terrorism attacks in various parts of the world and the still unhealed divisions in the Middle East.
