Something a little different!
Dear Friends,

Frankly, I'm not sure where today's commentary fits into the grand schema. The growing sense I am picking up in the world is that priesthood as we have come to know it is a thing of the past. By the time my children are my age there will be very few priests in existence as we've known them in a country like Australia. Institutional religion as we've know it is now rapidly dying if not already dead from the neck down. That said, I also do pick up still a deep hunger out there for men and women who will be our spiritual guides and companions on the journey. Our commentator today, Daniel Gullotta, wrote this essay last year as part of his on-going discernment process seeking to find out if he has a call to priesthood in the Anglican Church. I find it a poignant, even arresting reflection given many of our ong-going discussions as to where priesthood and Church is heading. It serves the purpose of taking us back to core issues about what the call of Jesus is.

PUBLISHING EARLY TOMORROW: Tomorrow I hope to get down to report on the Catalyst Forum on Bishop Geoffrey Robinson's book. It's shaping up to being one of the most interesting meetings we've seen in Australia for quite a while — see Fr Frank Brennan's article in Eureka Street today [LINK to "St Mary's, Bishop Robinson and the value of dialogue" by Frank Brennan]. Because of my trip down to the city tomorrow, I'll publish tomorrow's commentary early and hopefully will be able to provide a full report of tomorrow's meeting for you on Sunday. See the ad below for further details about the Catalyst Forum tomorrow. |
