Should the Church be involved in marriage?

Dear Friends,

Of course the accepted dogma is "yes" and if you are a priest like Fr Geoffrey Farrow in California you can get defrocked for opposing the accepted dogma. There is a hot-button issue under debate in California at the moment on a proposition put up by conservative Christian groups to overturn the trend towards more liberal attitudes to marriage and the approval of same-sex marriages in particular. Tom McMahon has sent us this commentary which argues that the Church's interest in marriage was a relatively late development in Church history and we might be better off returning to the more traditional attitude the Church took towards hwo relationships ought be regulated in society. I would welcome alternative, well argued commentaries from those in our community who hold to the view that the Church has a legitimate role to play in the regulation of relationships. <Read Tom's view>
