The "uniqueness" of Jesus…

Dear Friends,

Ian Elmer triggered a fascinating string in our forum discussing that "perennial favourite" the Virginity of Mary. In the last 24 hours the discussion has moved over, following a question I posed, to "the uniqueness of Jesus" — what attracts us to Jesus to the extent that we want to identify ourselves as "Christians" or "Catholics"? The contrasting responses from Peter Dresser and James are well worth reading and reflecting upon. I'm still "processing" what they had to write and no doubt will be moved to make a further contribution to that discussion later today. <Link to the string in our forum>

I continue to find Daniel Gullotta's essays interesting as they provide an insight into the mind of a young person coming to a post-school understanding of all this "theological stuff" for the first time. Daniel does take his studies seriously and I have to confess I always learn a new thing or two from reading what he has to say. Today his essay looks at the controversies that went on in the Church that led up to the Council of Nicea where the Christian understanding of Trinity was finally defined. <Link to today's lead commentary>

TOMORROW we're off to the Australian Reforming Catholics Conference at Chatswood so Catholica will be published earlier than normal. I have a good expectation that we will return with loads of new material and contacts to the mutual benefit of ourselves, the members of ARC and even the wider Church. If you happen to be in Sydney and can be there Milly and I look forward to catching up. For details about ARC, and the Conference, click the advertisement banner at the base of this email.
