What's the difficulty?

Dear Friends,

Headline banner

Today's commentary from Dr Graham English will cause a lot of interest I am sure — particularly in Catholic Education circles around Australia (and elsewhere if his previous forays on Catholic Education issues are anything to go by). I actually find these discussions incredibly frustrating because I honestly believe the entire mess the Catholic Church is in today could be turned around in about three weeks flat with a few simple words expressed right at the top of the tree. It's a bit like the frustration we went through waiting for a Prime Minister of this country who understood the symbolic and "sacramental-like" importance of saying "Sorry" to the indigenous peoples of this land though. I suspect we're going to be waiting a long, long time yet until we have someone, like John XXIII, who rekindles those few words that so electrified our Church for a brief window half a century ago now. How could anyone possibly convey to young people today the vibrancy and sense of hope that so many experienced in the Catholic Church for that brief period up until 1968 when it was all brought crashing to the ground. In this commentary today, I think Graham does capture something of the excitement of that era. <Join the discussion in our forum>

COMING UP: There'll be no lead commentary or email on Friday as I'm taking a day off for a change. We'll be back on Saturday with the next instalment of what is developing into a provocative series from Dr Ian Elmer looking at the legacy of St Paul.

Wishing you a great day wherever you happen to be ... in life and in our world.
