Bishop Robinson's impressions of the Church in America…
Dear Friends,

It's a great pleasure to bring you today the first comprehensive report that Bishop Geoffrey Robisnon has written since his return from a month-long lecture tour of the United States and Canada. He pulls no punches: he accuses Cardinal Re in the Vatican of orchestrating a campaign against him to try and silence him; he thinks the American church has massive problems basically stemming from the incompetent way the abuse crisis has been handled; and he responds very emphatically to the statement that was put out under the collective name of the Australian Catholic Bishops. If you want to witness a Bishop determined to respond to the needs of God's people this is it. No more pussy-footing around trying to please the Vatican here. We have a church in crisis and here we have a Bishop courageous enough to face up to it squarely. We might all follow Bishop Robinson's lead: our ultimate accountability is to Jesus Christ and God the Almighty himself: not to Cardinal Re, the Pope or the Vatican. We have as much responsibility for the stewardship of the Church and the massive crisis in relevance and participation that gripped the Church over the 20th Century as they do. It's time for the games to stop and for all Catholics to start getting a bit serious with our ecclesial leaders who have led us up a garden path. <Read today's introductory commentary by Kate>
