This book on Pius XII is important!
Dear Friends,

I've been mulling on Paul O'Shea's book on Pius XII ever since I finished reading it a couple of week's ago. In the last few days I have been gradually assembling my thoughts to try and bring you a coherent review. I am no expert on the scholarly content of his book and so cannot offer much comment on how it might be received by the expert scholars in the field of Holocaust studies. My intuitive sense is that it will be well-received. I've found the book personally important from an entirely different perspective. As I explain in the review, what Paul O'Shea has essentially constructed here in order to answer the key scholarly question he was addressing, is a biography of the man, Eugenio Pacelli, and a fascinating insight into the mindview of the leaders of the institional Church. It's study of the self-perception the leaders of the Catholic Church seem to have of their role. Our Church is in crisis. Perhaps the greatest crisis in its history given the massive disenchantment by the vast majority of baptised Catholics. The leadership has become disconnected from the ordinary people they are meant to serve. This study of Eugenio Pacelli might give us better insights as to why this disconnect has come about. <Read the review>
