Shaping up to be a must-see film...

Dear Friends,

The media today carries a story that the self-righteous are up in arms again with a new cause — protesting at the new film starring Nicole Kidman, "Golden Compass". "Let's all get our placards out and stand outside the cinemas proviing to ourselves that we know God's Laws better than all these other sinners and heathen in the world!" (In the forum today I'm gunna ask a question: "what do you think would be an insult to your beliefs and faith that you would be prepared to go to the barricades over?") From the review I read in the SMH a while ago it is shaping up to be the next "must see" film. It may well have been written by an agnostic but it seems certain to be a significant discussion starter amongst most religious people about that age-old challenge we all face in discerning good from evil.

And that seems a good way of introducing today's insightful commentary from Dr Andrew Kania. He's looking at the question of why we sould act morally? Why should we choose good over evil? Again it is a reflection which was originally written for young men at high school level — and I have heard on the grapevine that other secondary schools around this nation have begun to pick up on the value of many of the commentaries on Catholica, particulatly Dr Kania's, and are using them in their programs — but I'm sure many adults who have visited this territory a million times before will enjoy the perspective Andrew brings to it all. At heart, what he's doing is re-visiting the core message in Robert Bolt's famous play "A Man for All Seasons" on the life and execution of St Thomas More. <Click HERE to read Dr Kania's commentary>
