Are we called to service or to worship? Dear friends, We're competing with all the football grand finals this weekend but I am sure many will still find time to read Ian Elmer's commentary today. Ian continues this interesting exploration of the attitude and balance we are invited to bring to the business of "being Church". In viewing Church as "the Sacrament of Christ" are we called to worship or are we called to serve? <Read Ian's commentary> Excellent progress in the Petition to the Australian Catholic Bishops... This time last week the total stood at 4062 signatures. Today the total stands at 5604 — an increase of over 1500 signatures in the week. At this increased rate of growth, and based on the expectation that there will be a flood of hard-copy signatures at the end when parishes and schools who have been collecting signatures send their completed sheets in, the organisers are now looking with increased confidence at reaching the 10,000 total that they feel will start to have significant impact. There are still four weeks to go before the petition closes. This figure of 10,000 is basically selected because that is believed to be around the total of signatures that the conservative sectors of the Church who have dictated the agenda of the Church in this country for so long would be able to collect if they had mounted a similar exercise through their well-oiled networks. The rest of the Church do not have any "well-oiled" networks and the organisers of this petition are not endeavouring to set one up through this exercise. It is purely an exercise in helping demonstrate to our ecclesial leaders how strong the non-ideological voices of moderation and balance are in the Church in this country. Let the bishops know that there are a heck of a lot of other voices that do need to be listened to in this country. The message might eventually get through to Rome as well. <Click HERE to access the information page> and <Click HERE to sign the petition online>. |
