Why do we have to go to church? Dear friends, LISTENING TO YOUNG PEOPLE: For the information of our weekly readers, Amanda McKenna and I recorded a fascinating conversation with three young people on Thursday night which we'll publish on Monday. It's a wide ranging discussion attempting to understand the perspectives of a group of young people educated in Catholic schools but who are now part of the approximately 95% of young people who basically find the Church irrelevant in their lives. I hope to follow this discussion up in coming weeks with indepth interviews with a number of leading Catholic educators who might share with us their perspectives on what obstacles the Church is facing today in retaining the attention of young people. Not disconnected from all of that, Ian Elmer has a brilliant reflection for you today. It's one of the best arguments I've ever seen advanced by anyone exploring the Sunday Mass obligation. Also on our forum I've been having an interesting conversation with David Shütz who publishes the "Sentire cum Ecclesia — To think with the Church" blog. David and I have very different perspectives on a range of matters but I'm pleased to say our most recent exchange of emails in the last 24 hours has seen us finding a bit of common ground. After I've published this e-Digest today I'll be contributing a little further to that discussion by quoting an interesting comment from Bishop Geoffrey Robinson which I hope might advance the discussion a little further. We welcome your input on what it means "to think with the Church". <Read Ian's commentary> | <Read the forum discussion with David Shütz> Petition to the Australian Catholic Bishops Update... The number of signatories to the petition stood at 4062 signatures as we published Catholica today. At the present rate of growth it should pass the 5,000 mark in the coming week. <Click HERE to access the information page> and <Click HERE to sign the petition online>. |
