This week's developments at Catholica Australia...

Dear friends,

As indicated yesterday we have now changed over to a new mailing engine that sends out these daily and weekly emails. So far there seem to be no glitches but if by any chance you experience difficulties as a recipient I would appreciate you dropping me a note. At the base of this email you will find different links to those that have been used up until now where you can change your subscription details, suspend your emails when on holidays or unsubscribe.

Tomorrow I am pleased to be able to begin a new serialised set of commentaries on Spirituality that have been written by a great fan of Thomas Merton and Henri Nouewen, Fr Patrick Collins. I'm sure it will be of much value to many readers of Catholica.

Today Ian Elmer explores the controversy surrounding Arius at the Council of Nicaea to make the point that God doesn't necessarily give us pat answers. Debate, discussion and argument within the Church have been critical elements in the process of discerning what we understand of the nature of God and God's relationship to us. <more>

AND FOR OUR WEEKLY READERS HERE ARE OUR COMMENTARIES FROM THE PAST WEEK...

Friday's Email Commentary...

AvatarFriday's email commentary... Professor Len Swidler is about to release a new book entitled "Making the Church Our Own — How we can reform the Church from the ground up?". The editor of Catholica is sceptical that the Church can be reformed "from the ground up". What do you think? <more>

Peregrinus...

AvatarReading Jesus in context... Still exploring this intriguing territory our discussions seem to have focused on in the past week or so, Peregrinus today explores how we need to read Scripture, and interpret Jesus, in context — in the context of the times in which Scripture was written, and in the context of our own time. <more>

Andrew's Take...

AvatarThe sublime in simplicity... This week Dr Kania embarks on a delightful suite of reflections that provide practical insights into applied spirituality. In large measure spirituality, and general good health, is linked to the frame of mind through which we view life. Andrew's reflections are broadly looking at those things which help form our mindset or "frame of mind". As always, along the way, his essays also provide interesting historical observations. <more>

Brian's Take...

AvatarDrawing attention to three interesting articles... Not so much a "take" today, Brian Coyne simply draws attention to three interesting articles. Two of them are concerned with moral aspects of the climate change debate and the third concerns the place of meditation in the moral and spiritual development of young people. <more>

Sunday's Email Commentary...

AvatarPope Benedict's image of Jesus... Today the editor invites readers of Catholica to read the review of Pope Benedict's new book, Jesus of Nazareth, that John L. Allen has published in National Catholic Reporter. <more>

Best wishes for a great day wherever you happen to be ... in life, and in our world,

Brian Coyne
