Preparing for Christmas...
Saturday, 16th December 2006

Dear friends,

We've had some wonderful reflections this week on Catholica. The challenge at this time of year for everyone is finding the time to read and comment on them. I spent yesterday watching the four episodes of the Edward Stourton's BBC series, Absolute Truth — the Catholic Church in the World Today. I recorded them when they were broadcast in Australia back at the end of the last millenium. It has been fascinating re-visiting his analysis nearly a decade further down the track. In the coming days I hope to use some of this material as a trigger for further discussion in our community. I'm currently re-reading his book, which considerably expands on the television series.

The television series includes some fascinating interviews with then Cardinal Ratzinger and also one of the subscribers to our newsletter, Robert Blair Kaiser, features fairly prominently in the first episode.

Our broad plan over the last two weeks of the year is to continue with the normal schedule of commentaries this coming week and then from 26-31 January to run a special series of commentaries written by young people that might help provide better insights into their perspectives on spirituality and religion today. I've put a note in the members forum asking if there are any other young people out there who would like to contribute to this series.

A further interesting piece of information you'll pick up is that St Margaret is also revered as the the patroness of wives, mothers, and learning. [more]

AvatarAustralia and the Popes... Did you know Catholic Australia (a division of Church Resources) has recently added a further large resource to their website. It is a 150+ page compilation of information on the Popes who have reigned since Australia, the Great South Land of the Holy Spirit, was discovered by the Europeans 400 years ago in 1606. The compilation was put together by Brian Coyne. [more]
