EDITOR'S ROUND-UP

Here's the plan for the next stage of our development...
Saturday, 18th November 2006

Dear friends,

As telegraphed in Thursday's email, the next phase of the development of Catholica Australia is going to involve a series of advertisements in local media. Our chief aim at this stage is still one of building the core community — we feel we need about another half-dozen regular contributors to the forum to "spread the work load" — and to build our logistical support base. These first advertisements though are also designed to "test the water" in our outreach to the eventual principal audience we are seeking to serve — those who have dropped out of contact with the Church.

After a fair bit of to-ing and fro-ing as to where we would commit our resources at this initial stage we have decided to conduct this test marketing in the local area around where Catholica is published in the Blue Mountains region of New South Wales. We believe the demographic of this area probably has a higher than average percentage of residents who might be interested in the style and objectives of Catholica.

A small ad will run in each issue of The Blue Mountains Gazette in each of the weeks leading up to the end of the year. In addition, the issue of 6th December will be featuring a wrap around advertising Church services in this region in the lead-up to Christmas. We will be taking a more prominent ad in that wrap around. At some stage we also hope to gain advertorial support from Rural Press, the publishers of this newspaper and many other local newspapers around Australia. We will review the effectiveness of this campaign with a view to undertaking more of this sort of promotion next year.

This advertising will be in addition to the other on-going initiatives we are making to promote our work in other media.

I would like to thank all of our commentators and contributors to the forum for your inputs. I think we can all be quietly pleased with our progress so far and the quality of our work.

The excellence continues today and here's an overview of today's commentaries and a look at what we've published over the last seven days.

IAN'S OFFERING ...
CINDY THE PARISH SACRISTAN...

AvatarWho was boss in the early Church? In this essay, Ian Elmer examines what historical research is telling us about the structure of the earliest Christian Church and how it changed due to various influences over time. [more]

AvatarOh, what beautiful roses! In her delightfully subtle way this week Cindy cuts through much of the cant of parish life. We human beings are a funny lot when our priorities are examined in this way! [more]

OUR COMMENTARIES FROM THE PAST WEEK...
FRIDAY:

AvatarTrusting in God Yes, Vince did supply the avatar, but you can find a real picture with the story — which is about two experiences Vince has had being shipwrecked. It's about the state of helplessness he feels the Church is in today. [more]

AvatarFor married priests! Ruth really can't believe the news in recent days that the Archbishop Milingo case has actually caused some re-thinking in the Vatican. If it has though, she's all in favour of a review. [more]

THURSDAY:

AvatarGetting balance in our prayer life Just as we seek balance in our physical, emotional and mental health, Rosemary argues we need balance in our prayer life. Largely drawing on the Gospel of Luke she offers some thoughts at to how we might improve our prayer life. [more]

AvatarSo His Holiness doesn't like satire, Eh?! HERE IT IS. Go check out the debut performance of Farmer Jack. [more]

WEDNESDAY:

AvatarThe morality of State-sponsored torture II Peregrinus concludes his two-part series investigating the morality of terror. This week his focus is on what he calls "the moral analysis". [more]

AvatarOn The Sunday Age feature story on vocations... Our cloistered quartet are a pretty cheerful bunch endeavouring to reflect the mood within cloisters these days. They're actually pretty optimistic. [more]

TUESDAY:

AvatarA "big picture" view of the communications' crisis... Following on from some observations NCR commentator John Allen made last Friday, Tom Scott argues the Church has to look at a far bigger picture as to why its communications are failing. [more]

AvatarRuth discovers a new resource! Ruth came across a website this morning that really excites her. She's even thinking of "getting with it" and purchasing an iPod to listen to the wonderful reflections and prayers. [more]

MONDAY:

AvatarUnder My Nose Philosophy 101... Milly has been a long time contributor to our forum — and many others besides. In her first "Milly on Monday" commentary she explains her Under My Nose philosophy particularly as it applies to the internet. [more]

AvatarWhat a treasure Michael Leunig is! Michael Leunig has put away his brush and taken up the pen in a column in The Age. Cliff suggests we take seriously what he's suggesting. He nominates Leunig as a new prophet for our time. [more]

SUNDAY:

Tom McMahonSearching for an authentic understanding of Jesus' vision... Following on from Rosemary's Take last Thursday, further discussion on the discussion forum in the days following, and today's Scriptural readings, Tom Scott seeks to explore what the authentic Catholic vision is by constrasting it to a number of alternatives. These include the "abundance theology" of Evangelical Christianity, the message thrust in things like the film The Secret, and abominations within Catholic belief itself. [more]
