EDITOR'S ROUND-UP

Two provocative commentaries today...
Saturday, 21st October 2006

Dear friends,

The past couple of weeks has seen us really starting to get our act together on the forum. Both the public forum and the members forum are beginning to really fire well and I thank all who have been making an effort to make that happen.

For members who only visit our site weekly I do urge you to log-in and contribute to the conversations, debates and social exchange that takes place in this place. We do welcome new members who are supportive of the general ethos and objectives of the Catholica Australia endeavour and who respect the guidelines under which discourse takes place on this site. Our eventual objective is to create a place of contact with at least a small portion of that now vast audience that has become disconnected from institutional Catholicism. That can only happen via the quality of the community we are able to build in this place.

I've had enough to say in recent days via Tom's Take and an editorial (links to which you'll find below) so I don't have much more to add here other than to say I predict the commentaries today from both Ian and Cindy are likely to generate plenty of further discussion in coming days. I suggest it is going to be worth popping back in from time to time to see what responses their commentaries generate in the forums.

I do draw the attention of our weekly visitors to our competition to submit a name for our new animated character. We already have a significant number of entries but look forward to many more. There are great prizes for a small amount of input on your part and you don't have to even spend the cost of a stamp. Entry is free and by email. See the full details on the front page of our website.

IAN'S OFFERING ...
CINDY THE PARISH SACRISTAN...

AvatarWhy did God have to become human? Ian Elmer seeks today to give us an overview of one of the great theological disputes of history: why did God have to become human? It's still controversial. He also provides plenty of further reading for when you have the time to explore these matters more deeply. [more]

AvatarMusings on War and Circumcision Oh Dear! Oh Dear! This week Cindy's really taken the gloves off and speaks with her very blunt style about the evils of war and circumcision. And if you want to know what the connection between those two very unconnected subjects is don't miss what she has to say! [more]

OUR COMMENTARIES FROM THE PAST WEEK...
FRIDAY:

Thoughts on leadership and vision Tom Scott directs attention to two recent articles, one from the realm of Australian secular politics in The Age Newspaper, the other this week's lead story in OnLine Catholics. He suggests they have lessons for the institutional Church on why she is unable to offer a vision of the Jesus message that is retaining the partipation of her flock. [more]

AvatarThis is listed amongst Australia's most inspiring speeches... It's from the Deakin Lecture delivered in 2001 by Dr John Carroll, Professor of Sociology at Latrobe University on the dreaming of white Australians. "It is a leading mark of Australia as a political culture to have always and without exception been sceptical of idealism." [more]

THURSDAY:

Coping with situations that make us want to scream... Rosemary offers some thoughts on how to turn a bad hair day on its head into something that is positive. It's a lesson whose turning point hinges on a particular way of looking at Jesus as model. [more]

AvatarOn hope and belief... Ruth was really taken with a post written by Enda the other day in the forum. She, along with a few other contributors to the forum thought it ought to be given a bit more prominence. Check out what Ruth has to say and there's a link there to the post itself. [more]

WEDNESDAY:

Further thoughts on Forgiveness? Peregrinus has another look at the Christian notion of forgiveness following on from Rosemary and Milly's reflections on the same subject in the wake of the Amish tragedy in Pennsylvania. [more]

AvatarOn the address by the Papal Nuncio to the United Nations Assembly... Our cloistered friends are today quite elated by the address given by the Papal Envoy to the UN, on the subject of terrorism and how it is countered. [more]

TUESDAY:

Bringing them back to what? Tom Scott takes a further look at what we're endeavouring to achieve here with Catholica Australia. What do we have to invite them back to? [more]

AvatarWhy did God create Eve? I don't think this funny was originally created by a man! [more]

MONDAY:

A voice from Westminster... Cliff Baxter provides an overview, gleaned from viewing the ABC Compass television program last night, on the faith outlook offered by the Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster. [more]

AvatarOn the tensions in the world today... Ruth's had it up to the eyeballs with all the testosterone and tension in the world these days. She offers a prayer in frustration for Divine intervention to stop all the bickering. [more]

SUNDAY:

A way to solve the Church's problems... Those who've been around this place a while will remember Vince Exley's commentary back in August with Some Suggestions for our Future Church. Today he presents some new "outside the square" possible solutions to help address the prospect of priestless parishes being increasingly faced by regional Australians. What are your thoughts on Vince's suggestions? [more]

AvatarCOMPETITION: Name our new character! We're about to run our first competition. We want a name for a new animated character in our line-up. The prize will be 6 bottles of quality Australian wine AND a special compilation CD of tracks by Amanda McKenna. And there might be a second prize of a contract for a scriptwriter to pen the homilies which we propose our character will deliver each week. [Full details HERE]

Best wishes for a great day wherever you happen to be ... in life, and in our world,
