EDITOR'S
ROUND-UP
|
|
Dear friends,
It's been another busy, and fulfilling, week for all of us here at Catholica.
I'm pleased to report that our fund-raising efforts are on track and we
are in the process of sending a background briefing to each of the bishops
in Australia, and also some of the other religious leaders, explaining
the genesis of Catholica Australia and what it's objectives
are and seeking their moral support of our endeavour. They can expect
to receive our briefing paper early in the coming week.
I am still looking for another female voice to write a weekly commentary.
Ideally we would like someone who is in the mid-stage of raising a family
with teenagers or young adults. For just a little while longer now our
writers are volunteering their contributions to help us get Catholica
off the ground. In the not too distant future though, and God willing,
the daily commentaries will attract a remuneration of around $200 per
contribution. If you know an experienced writer who would be able to offer
a female commentary sympathetic to the objectives of the Catholica
Australia initiative written from the perspective above please contact
the editor,
Brian Coyne. Please see Cliff's comment further
down this page about the Writers' Workshop. We would also welcome enquiries
from individuals who perhaps don't yet have extensive writing experience
but who would like to use this as a training opportunity.
IAN'S
TAKE...
Searching for the historical
Jesus...
This week, Biblical scholar, Ian Elmer continues his quest to
reconstruct what scholars are finding out about the historical Jesus.
In his second article today in this series Ian is looking at what we can
learn from the extant information of Jesus early years. How did his childhood
shape his later teachings? [more]
CINDY
THE SACRISTAN...
Cindy
confronts the thoughts of a priestless parish... There's a growing
sense of panic at St Michael's. Word is out that Fr Cunning is about
to be transferred and the diocese doesn't have a replacement priest.
The rumours are rife and Cindy explores some of the questions
that are being asked. [more]
Cliff
reports that he has had the first takers for his Writer's
Workshop. If you would like to improve your writing skills why
not take up Cliff's offer.
He's basically offering his experience to anyone who wants to avail
themselves of this opportunity for free. For those who can afford a
small donation to cover some of his time and overheads it would be appreciated.
In a short note today he directs our attention to a recent video produced
by young Armenians who are endeavouring to keep alive the memory of
the genocide perpetrated by the Turks which cost the lives of more than
one million of their ancestors. It is powerful stuff. Our own appeal
for the Nersisyan family in Armenia received another $50 donation during
the week taking our total contribution now to $370. Thank you to all
who have contributed to this appeal.
Cliff writes…
Today the Curmudgeon takes a back seat for young
Christians. This is in line with the old fart's ambition to encourage
young creative people. In response to my appeal to begin a writer's
workshop Armen Gakavian has sent me a video prepared by young Armenians
in remembrance of the Genocide perpetrated by the Turks, costing more
than one million lives of their ancestors.
The catastrophe has enormous consequences. Hitler
in defence of his Final Solution of "the Jewish Problem" has
been quoted as saying "Who remembers the Armenians?"
Well these descendants of the world's oldest
Christian nation (AD 301) do, as the following video shows.
St Jude and St Batholomew who were martyred on
their mission to Armenia will thank you too. So will St Hrpsime who
refused to marry the King of Armenia (after fleeing an offer of marriage
from Emperior Diocletian) and was burned alive with her virgin followers.
So will St Gregory the Illuminator whose incarceration in a dungeon
for a dozen years brought the conversion of the king and his nation.
May God bless all Armenians, and you too.
Here is rap song about the Armenian Genocide
based on a traditional Armenian tune at www.youtube.com.
Warning:
the video clip contains gruesome images.
PS:
My Writers' Workshop is also open to scriptwriters, people who might
be interested in producing videos, multi-media content, poets and songwriters.
You do the work and I'll seek to act as your mentor, encourager and
make suggestions as to how you can improve your work.

there an ideal political party and an ideal political philosophy?
You might be surprised with the answer he comes up with. [more]

Looking
at all these BIG questions through the mind of a contemplative –
Part I... Fr Patrick W. Collins Phd has been quietly
following the conversations here on Catholica Australia
from his home in Michigan and has long been very supportive of our
endeavours. Fr Collins retired from active ministry earlier this
year but one suspects that "retirement" is the inappropriate
descriptor. It's more like a change of direction as to how he continues
his ministry. On his own website
he describes himself as "author, preacher, musician and university
professor. He senses that his principal vocation is to contemplative
living — out of which his various ministries flow. In addition
to numerous books and articles, Fr. Collins has produced forty-five
TV programs, and a number of videos, among them Thomas Merton:
Man, Monk, Myth with Music. Fr Collins has a deep love of
the thinking of Thomas Merton. Over the next three days we invite
you to immerse yourself in this very thoughtful reflection Fr Collins
has submitted to us which not only addresses issues raised in a
range of commentaries and posts in our forum but it poses a very
different way of looking at the overview of where the Church has
been heading since the Second Vatican Council. The
broad thrust of his argument, following the thinking of Thomas Merton,
is that not enough energy has been put into spiritual reform —
the bread and butter matter of how we relate to and intersect with
God. Read what Patrick has to say and, I mean it, if you
can handle the mental gear shift that is involved, "start really
living"... [more]

TAKE

Would
you like to be able to write more effectively? The Old Curmudgeon
would like to see a revival of the great Catholic tradition in writing.
Older readers might remember the Fr Brown Stories of that
famous English Catholic convert, G.K. Chesterton, but here
in Australia we had the Around the Boree Log tradition of
Fr Hartigan ('John O'Brien'). Catholica Australia
and Cliff Baxter are offering all those who want to become
more effective writers professional tuition and a place to get themselves
published. [more]

The
journey to spiritual maturity... In a moving personal reflection
Kate looks back over the twists and turns in her own spiritual
journey. She concludes with a Chinese proverb which sums it all
up: "One who asks a question is a fool for five minutes;
one who does not ask a question remains a fool forever."

Molly
battles with her conscience. Molly Arbeit, normally an
astute and composed Housekeeper to Father, is all of a-flutter. Not since
Byron wrote Maid of Athens has there been such a stirring in her,
and others', hearts of Canonical Age. Yet it was not "Maid of
Athens/ere I go/Zoe mou, sas agapou". It was a verse from the
so-serious John Donne. A case of "Ask not for whom the Flea bites/It
bites for thee". One of the well-meaning possum stirrers from
the Catholica community has sent a poem by Donne to Molly. [more]

In
coming weeks around Australia many thousands of students will begin their
final high school exams. We wish all students
our best wishes in their exams. We recorded a track a little
while ago of one of those students rehearsing the piano piece she will
be examined on next Tuesday morning. Michaela, a student at one
of the Catholic Colleges in the Parramatta Diocese, is one of the many
thousands of Australian students preparing for their examinations and
having to cope with the heightened levels of stress that so often accompany
them. Our hope is that you will sit back and relax and enjoy the sample
of Michaela, along with vocalist Amanda McKenna, performing
the Alan Parsons song "Damned If I Do" which you'll find
HERE. (Editor's Note: This track has since been removed from our website.)

Sr
Feralia confronts Fergal O'Dobbin and his assistant... Sister
Feralia, usually of moderate disposition, is furious. She has written
to His Eminence to protest against an espionage attempt during her Nun
Recruitment Campaign. Fergal O'Dobbin and his junior, despite their
recent humiliation as cross-dressing agents for Orthodoxy against Catholic
men's drinking clubs, are at it again, taking a walk on the wild side
with the assistance of an eager costumer in Oxford Street, Sydney. [more]
