The Church is pregnant! Dear all, Bishop's Mark Coleridge's comments yesterday at his installation as Archbishop of Canberra-Goulburn do warrant reflection (See CathNews report HERE). It's a nice turn of phrase likening the Church to a pregnant Elizabeth. I pick up a sense that something like that is happening. There's some sort of ferment going on. Catholica Australia is a tiny, tiny part of something much bigger that seems to be stirring in the old girl. Vatican II briefly raised the hopes of the world but shortly after the institution went into a massive and steep decline that has been almost like a haemorrhage. Ordinary people are seemingly sick to death of the manner in which their spiritual home was effectively stolen from under their noses and are beginning to make their voices heard. Take Vince Exley for example. He's put forward a few suggestions for our future in today's edition of Catholica. Vince is no red-necked radical. He's a 75-year-old retired bachelor living up in paradise (the Whitsunday Islands), who does a bit of work for the Vinnies and who really does love his Church. Those of us who've known Vince for a while can see the way his love for his Church seeps out of the very pores of his skin in everything he writes. He's also worried for his Church. Probably a bit like the aged Elizabeth would have been worried for the child she was carrying. Have a read of Vince's suggestions and yourself make a contribution to the discussion of what sort of Church we are looking for in the future. TWO
