Catholic media...

A voice from Westminster

The editor of Catholica has suggested that someone ought to undertake some kind of audit of what is published under the name of Catholicism on the internet. On Saturday the Zenit news agency published a recent address by Archbishop John Foley, the head honcho in the Vatican hierarchy for media and social communications, gave to new bishops encouraging them to use the media. It's well worth the read.

We don't yet have the resources to undertake a comprehensive audit of Catholic communications but I have begun preparing a list for a Catholica Click Around (if you can think of a better name please say it) which will regularly look at bits and pieces of news and views — with a few Curmudgeon punch lines. Eventually we'll compile a directory which might give a convenient overview of different kinds of Catholic websites that are available around the world.

Click go the Catholics
Click, click, click
Searching is the mind
In a world that's pretty sick
Until they find Catholica
'Saying we like you'
'Come here and join us
catholica dot com dot au'

I'm in the process of compiling a list of Catholic websites which I'll get Brian to publish in the next few days. In discussion with Brian we've been trying to work out the best way of dividing them into categories. Initially we are thinking of providing some kind of overview of the official diocesan websites around Australia. We'd like reader feedback on which websites you think work well and which could do with a lift.

To keep the process manageable let's just endeavour to do a few each week. We'll start off with the main metropolitan websites this week. Over the next few days would you mind having a look at each of these websites and sending me (cliffbaxter@catholica.com.au) a two or three sentence summary, with a rating of 1-10 (10 being best) as to how well you think each of these websites are in communicating the Good News in today's world. I'll summarise the results and we'll publish them on a new links page. In follow-up stages we'll have a look at diocesan websites, Catholic media websites, social justice websites, and so on.
