World Youth Day 2008 — an opportunity for renewal...

We are desperately in need of new, green shoots in the Church.

World Youth Day in Sydney in 2008 is an opportunity for vigorous life to spring anew from the tired wood of decadence, to break free from the infertile old growth of prejudice, and for the flower of youth to blossom upon the earth and create a 'greening' of older souls whose integrity may be threatened by despair.

Who knows, it could usher a new era of peace!

Christianity is forever young, awaiting with eagerness the resurrectional Springtime, the birdsong of new life, the sweeping away of cold and darkness for the joyful season.

Let not a gloomy older face be seen, let not a single hard word be said to discourage a young person.

Every day a youngster has discovered Jesus.

Holy Spirit,

Pour out your grace on this Great South Land of the Holy Spirit and grant to us a New Pentecost.

Make of this land a true place of welcome for the young people of this world.

Grant to those young people who come conversion of life, a deeper faith, and love for all.

Enable them to build a new civilization of life, love and truth. Make them true witnesses tio your power and grace.

Our Lady of the Southern Cross, Help of Christians — pray for us.

Blessed Mary MacKillop — pray for us.

WYD is a once in a lifetime experience for young people from around the world as they land on our shores.

On Palm Sunday 2006 seventy Australians received the WYD Cross, together with the Iccon of Our Lady. It was handed over by the young people of Cologne, host of the 2005 World youth Day, at the Papal mass in St Peter's Square.

WYD08 is seen as a catalyst for ongoing renewal of parishes throughout Australia.

Diocesan and youth ministry committees are preparing parish support materials.

These will show:

  • How to set up a youth group in your parish.
  • How to engage young people in the life and mission of the parish.

This resurgence of youth will include encouragement of youthful Prayer and Eucharistic Adoration.

WYD 08 has developed World Youth Day school curriculum materials for Australian schools and parishes.

The themes are:

  1. 2006: 'Your world is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.'
  2. 2007: 'Just as I have loved you, you should also love one another.'
  3. 2008:'You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you., and you will be my witnesses.'

The material is available at www.wyd2008.org

So come on everybody, Get with the Spirit!
